A 10 m waterfall near the Kukule Ganga project, with a viewing platform.
Makeli Ella is a waterfall of about 10 m in the Kalutara District, near Kelinkanda and close to the Kukule Ganga hydropower project. From a distance the falling water is said to look like a bride's veil. Round granite boulders, smoothed by the weather over time, lie around the falls. Upstream there is a large natural pool, and about 6 m downstream a small islet-like rock called Thumodara adds to the setting.
The falls drop past tropical wet evergreen forest with breadfruit, jak and arecanut, and streams edged with wild banana and heliconia. A viewing platform now overlooks the river.
Good to know
Bathing is no longer allowed here since the Kukule Ganga project was built, so plan to enjoy the falls from the viewing platform.
By road, take the Matugama to Agalawatte road as far as Lathpandura, then the Molkawa road. The falls are on the way to the Kukuleganga Holiday Resort.
